Hastings Pic 4More than 170 guests and VIPS from the travel trade and media throughout Ireland gathered at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin for the awards which were created to acknowledge outstanding performance in the travel and tourism industry.

Sir William Hastings, who founded the group in 1966, is at the helm of the company and works alongside his four children who all hold senior positions to ensure the six hotels continue to be recognised by visitors from around the world.

“We are thrilled to have named Best International Hotel Group at the Blue Insurances Travel Media Awards. What makes this award extra special, is the fact that it was voted for by the Irish media, many of which have stayed at our six hotels and play a big part in helping us inform people about our wonderful offering.

“Over the last fifty years we have worked very hard to position Hastings Hotels as Northern Ireland’s leading collection of hotels and have a fantastic team of staff working in the hotels and at head office. What’s more, I am very proud that my own children all hold senior positions within the group and are very much involved in the day to day running of the business,” Sir William said.

Howard Hastings, Managing Director of Hastings Hotels added: “It is an honour to have collected this award and to be recognised by the Irish media as Best International Hotel Group. It has been a very successful year for us as the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa was recently crowned the supreme winner of Irish hospitality at the glittering Hotel & Catering Review Gold Medal awards. At Hastings Hotels we have a long term philosophy to reinvest year on year in our people and our properties and we believe it is this type of commitment that enables us to win such prestigious awards.”

Julie Hastings, Marketing Director of Hastings Hotels added: “We would like to thank the Irish media for voting for Hastings Hotels and for continuing to help us attract visitors from the Republic of Ireland.”

evergladesThere is little doubt that the European city of culture Derry / Londonderry has been resounding success for Legenderry. With the incredible amount of events ranging from the Fleadh Cheoil, Seamus Heaney evening, Carla Dylan, The Turner prize, and so on it has really placed this amazing city well and truly on the map and I for one have visited three times in the last year, more than I had done in my previous 25 years.

When visiting, you realise that it’s not just the buildings, and the cityscape that have changed but the people have really embraced the transformation of Northern Ireland and have made Derry a really cool place to visit, in fact I’m off up there again in a couple of weeks.

I have stayed in nearly all the hotels in the city, but one that had not visited until recently was the Hastings Everglades hotel. The four star Everglades Hotel has an unrivalled reputation in the North West as the area’s premier hotel for special events and grand occasions. This unique venue makes a profound and positive impact on guests and conference delegates alike, with state-of-the-art conference facilities and the North West’s largest function room, the Grand Ballroom, holding up to 400 people for weddings, banquets and gala events.

Daub of beef delightfulAmazing seafood chowder Guests can savour the culinary delights of The Grill restaurant, which provides a unique dining experience.
Inspired menus made with fresh local ingredients make the “Grill” a great place to entertain friends or just have a delightful evening meal in beautiful surroundings.

I had probably the best seafood chowder I have ever experienced followed by a wonderfully cooked daub of braised beef with chunky fries. Divine!

If the dining room seems a little formal you might want to the Library Bar for an informal bite to eat, which offers light snacks throughout the day along with a range of cocktails and a full bar service.
Take the time to enjoy the perfect pint of Murphy’s, relax, and sink into an armchair in front of the glowing fire.

IMG_0746One thing that’s important for me is a good nights sleep, When visiting hotels as often as I do I find bringing a feather pillow is a good way of ensuring I am comfortable in bed.  But at the Everglades you wont need one as they use Heavenly Cloud Beds.

One of the things about Hotel rooms is that most guests spend more time in their room than any other part of the hotel, so if figures if you want to give your guests a great experience it’s important that you give them a great nights sleep, and there is little doubt with a heavenly bed you will get a great nights sleep.

The Everglades has 64 deluxe bedrooms including three suites, all carefully designed to let you relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of the world outside.

Every room has been tastefully furnished and decorated, so that you can get maximum relaxation with minimum fuss. My bedroom was spacious, luxurious and came with every modern comfort.  I had booked last minute and my room, well suite, was enormous. If I had a football team with me they could have stayed too as it was truly a wonderful space.
